The Kane County Sheriff's Office Evidence Unit has been charged with the responsibility of recovering evidence of a crime and insuring the integrity of the chain of custody.

The Evidence Unit is responsible for the chain-of-custody of all evidence, maintaining accurate records for court presentations, transporting evidence to and from the Illinois State Police lab for testing. They also process various crime scenes to include: bombings, arsons/fires, crimes against a person and property damage and transportation of evidence.

The Evidence Unit is also required by Illinois law to indefinitely maintain all evidence in homicide, manslaughter, sexual assault, arson, treason, forgery cases and evidence of biological nature. The Evidence Unit is responsible for the safekeeping of all property which is seized, recovered or found by the Sheriff’s Police and by other Sheriff’s Department personnel including Court Security Deputies, Correction Officers as well as the State's Attorney's Child Advocacy Center, Kane County Fire Investigation task force and Kane County Major Crimes task force.

After a criminal case is adjudicated and the Evidence Unit receives a disposition from the courts whether the evidence or property will be returned to the owner or destroyed. All items of evidence are expunged according to applicable laws.
