The GIU is a specialized unit within the Corrections Bureau of the Kane County
Sheriff's Office. Each member of the GIU is a volunteer and has accepted
this duty as a collateral assignment. The unit is made up of a Lieutenant,
who manages its overall operation and direction, a Sergeant as first line
supervisor, and nine Corrections Officers. The Corrections Officers come from
every shift and duty assignment within the facility. The unit's function is
to identify street gang members that are confined in the Kane County Adult Justice Center.
The identification of street gang members supports the detainee housing classification
system. The proper classification and housing of detainees will prevent incidents
and acts of violence among gang members, thereby enhancing the safety and
security for everyone. The unit members collect this information by analyzing
tattoos, conducting interviews and observing the interaction of detainees
with one another. The Officers also analyzes the graffiti that is found during
routine cell searches. The unit is also utilized as a valuable intelligence
resource by other specialized gang enforcement units within Kane County, the
Illinois State Police, the Illinois Department of Corrections and Federal
Law Enforcement Agencies. The unit members attend numerous monthly meetings
held by local law enforcement agencies regarding gang crime and activities
within Kane County. This information allows unit members to assess any potential
retaliatory threat due to assault or shooting on the street.
