Overview:
The Kane County Sheriff’s Office Citizen Police
Academy provides community members with an inside look at local law
enforcement. Through the Academy our police agency is open to the community
and increased trust and understanding becomes possible through openness and
education. The Academy allows participants to experience conditions similar
to the training that officers receive and exposes participants to the daily
operational duties of police officers.
The Citizen Academy is taught by Sheriff’s Office
members, each highlighting their individual area of expertise. During the 10
week academy, citizens will learn about various divisions within the
Sheriff’s Office including crime scene investigation, evidence, patrol,
corrections, K9, SWAT, as well as criminal and traffic laws. Each Academy
member will do a ride along with a patrol deputy to experience firsthand the
situations police officers are routinely exposed to and how each situation
is handled.
Potential candidates for the Citizen Police Academy
must be at least 18 years of age, any resident of Kane County,
have no felony convictions, and have no misdemeanor arrests within
one year of application. Enrollment is limited to 20 students per academy.
The Kane County Sheriff’s Office will offer two academy classes per
year. There is no cost to attend the academy, only a commitment to attend
all required classes.
