Booking

The Booking Division of the Kane County Sheriff's Department is part of the Corrections Bureau and processes approximately 10,000 people a year. Booking is where the Corrections Bureau meets the Patrol Bureau of the Sheriff's Department, and every other Police Department within Kane County that arrests and detains offenders for criminal violations of the law. The Booking Officers will search the detainee immediately upon arrival. The officers will then assess any immediate medical needs by having the detainee screened by a medical professional. Once the medical screening is completed the detainee will processed into the facility. The Booking Officer starts with charging documents or court order that places the detainee in the lawful custody of the Sheriff. These charging documents, or orders, are checked for completeness and accuracy. If the charging documents or court order is accepted, the Booking Officer will collect, account for and secure any valuables that the detainee arrived with. The detainee is then entered into the Booking Computer System. This system records the detainees following information; identity, address, phone number, emergency contact person, property inventory, charge or offense, case number and next court appearance date. If the detainee enters the facility under a sentence, then the system will contain the release date when that sentence is complete. The detainee is then photographed and fingerprinted in accordance with the reason for their confinement. The detainee will then be issued a jail uniform and given a second medical screening with a TB skin test. The detainee will remain in the custody of the Sheriff until bond is posted, an order of release from the court or the given sentence expires.

The Booking Division is responsible for the execution of all orders of the court as it relates to confinement. Booking Officers will also collect, count, secure and transfer all posted bond monies to the Circuit Clerk's Office. They are also tasked with the transporting detainees to, and from, court appearances all over the state. They transport detainees to off-site medical and dental appointments and to other county jails that hold detainees for Kane County. Booking Officers also man the Judicial Lock-Up at the Kane County Judicial Center. These officers hold the detainees in a secure setting until they appear before the court. This Lock-Up serves all three floors of the Judicial Center from a secure elevator system that is operated by the Control Center.
