Definition
Under general supervision, receives 911 system emergency and non-emergency calls; dispatches first responders according to established procedures, operates various telecommunications equipment, and performs related work as assigned. Communications Division is a 24 hour a day continuous operations function of the Sheriff's Department, and Public Service Answering Point (PSAP) for ten police departments and seven fire departments.
Essential Job Functions
Receive multi-jurisdictional calls from the public requesting police, fire, medical or other emergency services. Using a computer aided dispatch system; determine the nature and location of the emergency and deploy units as necessary. Maintain contact with all units on assignment while consistently disseminating information and updating their status/location. Monitor several complex radio frequencies while operating a variety of communications equipment. Enter and retrieve information from an assortment of computerized files. These include; but are not limited to, missing persons, wanted persons, orders of protection, registered sex offenders, stolen weapons, and stolen vehicles. Perform other duties as required.
Applicants must be 18 years of age and have a high school graduate. Must type a minimum of 35 words per minute. Must be available to work any shift, as well as weekends, and holidays. Must pass a general aptitude test, a medical examination, and a thorough background investigation. General working knowledge of Microsoft Windows preferred. Multitasking is a necessity. Must communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats. Map reading is required. Ability to remain calm under extremely stressful situations while making rapid and sound independent decisions is crucial. Display patience with callers who may be emotionally distraught, intoxicated, or difficult to understand. Memorization of codes, names, locations, and other detailed information is required. Communicate tactfully and effectively with citizens, public safety personnel, and coworkers.
