What is the Citizen's Sheriff Academy?

The Kane County Citizen's Sheriff Academy is a no-cost twelve-week program designed to provide the Citizens of Kane County with insight and understanding of the daily law enforcement and Corrections operations of KCSO. The program consists of a three-hour class conducted once a week with a curriculum that addresses a myriad of policing subjects and their interrelationship to the community.

The Sheriff's Office conducts a spring and fall session each year.

Why do we conduct the program?

The Kane County Sheriff's Office offers the Citizen's Sheriff Academy so that our officers can interact with area residents in a relaxed and welcoming setting, as well as to help our neighbors feel fully informed regarding the role of public safety and corrections in their local community.

What are our goals?

Kane County Deputies/Officers volunteer their time to conduct the classes, as well as to prepare the course curriculum and competencies based on real-world experiences. The program has been developed to allow for small-group interaction and exchange. The small-group settings allow us to exchange information and develop deeper relationships with you, our neighbors.

What topics are covered?

Topics that are taught include, and may not be limited to, Patrol Tactics, Bomb Unit, Criminal Investigations, Traffic and DUI Enforcement, K-9 Unit, Firearms and Shoot-Don't-Shoot Scenarios, Crime Scene Investigation, SWAT, Corrections, Criminal Procedures, and Neighborhood Policing.

Is the Citizen's Sheriff Academy for me?

The Kane County Citizen's Sheriff Academy is designed to provide students with a behind the scenes understanding of what it looks like to be a Sheriff's Deputy and the various areas within the Sheriff's Office. The course is designed for enthusiastic learners who are eighteen years of age or older and wish to strengthen community partnerships. A criminal background check and waiver of liability is required prior to admittance.

When does the next session start?

The 2024 Spring Citizen's Sheriff Academy begins March 6th and will run every Wednesday from 6p-9p through graduation on May 22nd. For additional program details, please contact Sergeant Matt Gabrielson at 630-444-1019 or Deputy Jason Katsuleas at KatsuleasJason@co.kane.il.us .
